Clair Halverson: Rocking Comfort for Neonatal Newborns
Clair Halverson has lived a life of service to others. From his boyhood days on a North Dakota farm through his years of raising a family and enjoying a successful business career, he has served those in need. Now in his retirement years, Clair continues to feel the call to help by giving over 40 hours each week to a number of organizations.A devout Christian, Clair has served First Presbyterian Church in Sioux Falls at every level from leadership to reading to preschool children. He volunteers at the Furniture Mission so families in need have decent furnishings. An Air Force veteran, Clair volunteers at the local VA hospital where he does technical work. For a number of years, he helped at Feeding South Dakota, a weekend food program for children. At the Banquet, a unique restaurant for the hungry, he does the jobs most volunteers avoid. At Compassionate Care Hospice, Clair's work in administration serves both patients and their families. But what may best demonstrate Clair's dedication to helping those in need is his work at the Sanford Hospital Neonatal Intensive Care Center. He rocks fragile newborns so they experience the human connection. He rocks at night when it is most difficult to find volunteers. When parents are unavailable, Clair rocks. He rocks so the nurses are free to tend babies. And most amazing, he rocks on holiday nights so others are able to be with family and loved ones. Christmas Eve--Clair rocks. New Year's Eve--Clair rocks. He and his wife Doriene, who passed away early in their retirement, raised two accomplished, serving daughters. In turn, the daughters married two accomplished, serving husbands who in turn raised accomplished, serving children. His and Doriene's example established a culture that goes beyond his generation.Clair Halverson is a Champion for Excellence in unselfish service to others.
