Celebrate National Tourism Week With a Visit to the SD Hall of Fame
The South Dakota Hall of Fame is a statewide 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization designed to honor, inspire, and educate. Though our impact is statewide, the heart of our organization is based in Chamberlain at the South Dakota Hall of Fame Visitor & Education Center.
The Visitor & Education Center is home to a vast collection of South Dakota history in the form of our exhibits, and the collective legacies of over 770 individuals who have been inducted into the South Dakota Hall of Fame since its establishment in 1974.
Our organization started in a cramped log cabin in Fort Pierre and over the last 49 years, we have amassed an ever-growing collection of South Dakota history. Whenever an individual is inducted into the South Dakota Hall of Fame, their induction includes collecting a variety of materials to help share their stories. This unique archive goes back over 45 years and is one of the most comprehensive and unique collections about South Dakotans and their statewide influence.
With growth like this, the need for a larger facility to showcase this unique collection was needed. In 1992 the organization moved to a small office in downtown Chamberlain, and on June 3, 2000, a 25-year dream was realized with a grand opening for a 10,000-square-foot building overlooking the Missouri River in Chamberlain which remains our home base today.
The Visitor & Education Center is a vibrant place for locals, group outings, class field trips, and tourists alike to visit and find inspiration around every corner. Along with our expansive exhibits that are updated regularly, we host a variety of events, including our upcoming 2023 Art Show, as well as our annual Honors Ceremony to celebrate the new class of inductees. The Class of 2023 will be celebrated on September 8th & 9th later this year.
The Visitor & Education Center is open year-round, with expanded summer hours: Monday - Saturday, 9 - 6 PM beginning Memorial Day Weekend through September. Plan your next visit, and don’t forget to check out our newly revamped gift shop.
