Pursuing Passion and Giving Back with Jim Entenman

Jim Entenman, a true icon in the South Dakota and national motorcycling scene, has been fueling his passion for over 45 years. Since co-founding the now-legendary J&L Harley-Davidson in Sioux Falls, SD, with his brother Lonnie in 1975, Jim's unwavering dedication has driven the industry’s growth and expansion. His tireless efforts have not only fulfilled the dreams of countless motorcyclists but also supported numerous charities and civic activities, reflecting his deep-rooted love for the community.

Jim Entenman was inducted into the South Dakota Hall of Fame in 2024 in recognition of his impactful contributions to the state. His strong business leadership has sparked economic growth, while his philanthropic efforts have enriched communities throughout South Dakota. Jim joined 2021 Inductee, friend, and nominator Angela Kennecke to discuss his life and legacy.

Jim's career is a testament to his entrepreneurial spirit and leadership. His efforts have expanded his business from a small shop to four dealerships: J&L Harley-Davidson, Sioux Falls; Glacial Lakes Harley-Davidson, Watertown, SD; Harley-Davidson of Fargo, Fargo, ND; and Big Sioux PowerSports, Sioux Falls.

When asked about a pivotal moment in his path to success, Jim recalled the challenges he and his brother faced as young business owners during the ’80s Ag crisis, which impacted farmers and small businesses alike. A powerful conversation with their father about values and goals reinforced the importance of hard work to achieve success. After two decades of dedication, Jim and his brother overcame those challenges and began giving back to the community.

“I truly believe that if a business person is successful, you owe it to your community to give back in whatever way you want to,” shared Jim, “and I am so happy that we could start giving back after those challenges.”

Jim’s business success has fueled both his and his wife, Jill's, passion for community service. Their commitment and achievements have created a legacy that has touched countless lives. In 1996, Jim founded Hot Harley Nights, an event he planned and guided for 25 years. The event grew from 250 participants in its first year to a peak attendance of 40,000 participants from across the US and numerous other countries. Hot Harley Nights has raised over $3.5 million for Make-A-Wish of South Dakota, funding hundreds of wishes for children with life-threatening medical conditions.

Jim’s dedication to public service shines through his extensive involvement in government and the community. As a Sioux Falls City Council member, he actively shaped local policies and initiatives. His leadership with the Build It Now Committee was a game-changer, driving the successful approval and construction of the Denny Sanford Premier Center—a landmark achievement that continues to benefit Sioux Falls.

“It was important to look at what our business could really do for the community,” said Jim, “whether that was at the local level or the state level, and that’s why I was involved. I think it’s valuable to make a difference however you can.”

When asked how Jim hopes his work will impact future generations here in South Dakota he shared,

“If there is a legacy I want to leave behind and I want to inspire the next generation with it is to work hard, be focused in what you’re doing, be involved in what you’re doing, and be involved in the community,” shared Jim, “but most of all you have to have fun.”
